What is COSHH?

…and why is it important?

COSHH is the legislation that relates to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health.

Under the COSHH regulations, all persons need to know the safety precautions to be taken so as not to endanger themselves or others through exposure to potential hazards.

Even without legislation, it makes good sense to be aware of any hazards which could arise in the workplace, and to ensure you avoid potential hazards.

When using any chemicals it is essential that you know what you are dealing with. It is extremely important that chemical products are not tampered with – if dilutions vary or mixing of chemicals occur, then hazards can’t be efficiently assessed.

ALWAYS

  • Look at the health and safety panel on the label
  • Note the hazard symbols and treat the product accordingly
  • Use the recommended safety equipment i.e. goggles, gloves etc
